Surfing
February 11, 2026
There's something magical about catching your first wave. That moment when the ocean lifts you up and carries you forward — it's pure joy, and it's something everyone should experience at least once.
At Ohana, we're lucky to have Dilu as our surf instructor. Dilu isn't just a teacher; he's a member of our Ohana family and one of the most patient, encouraging instructors you'll ever meet. He's been surfing these waters his entire life, and his knowledge of the local breaks is unmatched.
Your first lesson typically starts on the beach with the basics: how to position yourself on the board, how to paddle, and how to pop up. Dilu will make sure you're comfortable and confident before you even touch the water.
Once you're in the ocean, Dilu will guide you to the perfect spot for beginners — usually the gentle, rolling whitewater of Hiriketiya Bay. He'll help you position yourself for each wave and give you a push at just the right moment. Most beginners are standing up and riding waves by the end of their first session.
The water temperature in Sri Lanka rarely drops below 27 degrees Celsius, so you won't need a wetsuit — just board shorts or a swimsuit and a rash guard for sun protection. We provide all the equipment you need, including soft-top boards that are perfect for beginners.
Don't worry about your fitness level or age. Surfing is for everyone, and Dilu adapts his teaching to each individual student. Whether you're 8 or 68, you can learn to surf here.
